A house is one of twelve segments that divide the sky around you at the moment of your birth. Picture the great circle of the local sky split into twelve angular slices, like wedges of an orange. Each wedge is a house, and whichever planets fall inside it take on the affairs that house governs.
It is easy to confuse houses with signs, but they are different layers of the chart. The signs are twelve 30° divisions of the ecliptic — fixed to the band of constellations the Sun travels through over a year. The houses are twelve divisions of your local sky, fixed to the horizon and meridian where you stand. Signs describe the quality of an energy; houses describe the arena of life where it plays out.
A useful shorthand: a planet shows what is happening, its sign shows how it expresses, and its house shows where in your life it lands — career, home, relationships, health, and so on. A confident, expressive Sun in Leo means something very different in the 10th house of career than in the 4th house of home and roots.
Signs vs. Houses, in one line: the zodiac signs are slices of the ecliptic (the Sun's yearly path); the houses are slices of your sky (the local horizon). Each house has a natural sign and ruler — the 1st house echoes Aries and Mars, the 2nd echoes Taurus and Venus, and so on — but in a real chart the actual signs on each house cusp depend entirely on your birth time and place.
The houses do not float freely — they are pinned to a single point: the Ascendant, the exact degree of the zodiac rising on your eastern horizon at birth. The Ascendant is the cusp of the 1st house. Once it is fixed, every other house cusp follows from it.
Finding the Ascendant requires precise sidereal time — the celestial clock that tells you which part of the sky is overhead at a given moment and place. Sidereal time, the tilt of Earth's axis (obliquity), and your geographic latitude together fix the rising degree. Because the sky turns roughly one degree every four minutes, even a small error in birth time can swing the Ascendant — and the whole house framework — into different signs.
Two of the four angles come from the Ascendant axis: the Ascendant (ASC) on the 1st-house cusp and the Descendant (DSC) opposite it on the 7th. The other two come from the meridian: the Midheaven (MC) at the 10th-house cusp and the Imum Coeli (IC) at the 4th. These four angles are the skeleton; a house system (Placidus, Whole Sign, Koch, and others) then divides the space between them into the remaining cusps.

Without houses, a chart tells you only that planets sit in signs — the flavour of your energies, but not where they are spent. Houses turn the chart into a map of lived experience. They answer the practical questions: Where will this person seek security? Where do they shine? Where is the friction?
A planet's house is often the single most concrete thing in a reading. Venus in the 5th house leans toward romance and creativity; the same Venus in the 6th turns toward work, service, and daily care. An emphasised 10th house points to a public, career-driven life; a loaded 12th turns inward, toward solitude, retreat, and the unconscious.
Houses also carry strength. Planets near the four angles (the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th cusps) are considered prominent and forceful — they act on the world.
