Every astrological chart is built from two interlocking layers of meaning: planets and signs. Understanding the difference between them — and how they interact — is the foundation of reading any chart.
Planets represent inner drives and psychological functions. Each planet corresponds to a distinct mode of experience: the Sun is your conscious identity, the Moon is your emotional instinct, Mars is your desire and drive to act. When astrologers ask “what is a planet doing?” they mean: which function of the psyche is being activated, and how intensely?
Signs represent styles and modes of expression. A sign doesn’t do anything by itself — it colors the planet that occupies it. Mars in Aries moves with direct, impulsive urgency. Mars in Libra still acts, but deliberates, weighs options, seeks balance. The drive (Mars) is the same; the style (sign) is completely different.
Kairos uses both in natal chart calculation and transit tracking. When computing your natal chart, Kairos derives the precise ecliptic longitude of each planet at your birth moment using full VSOP87 theory — then maps that longitude into the corresponding zodiac sign. In transit tracking, Kairos watches where each planet travels today relative to the same signs and degrees in your birth chart, identifying meaningful contacts called aspects. The sign tells you the quality of the transit; the planet tells you the domain of life being activated.
A useful analogy: think of planets as verbs — they perform actions — and signs as adverbs — they modify how those actions are performed. Saturn (to limit, to structure) in Scorpio (deeply, probing, relentlessly) produces an entirely different character than Saturn in Gemini (broadly, curiously, with restless agility).
Kairos tracks ten bodies: the classical seven visible to the naked eye, plus the three modern planets discovered by telescope. Classical planets govern by day and night rulership; modern planets co-rule signs where the classical system did not assign them.
Kairos uses this order to assign planetary hour rulers throughout the day and week.
Each sign occupies a 30° arc of the ecliptic, characterized by its element (fire, earth, air, water), its modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable), and its ruling planet. These three qualities together define the sign’s fundamental nature.
Reading the grid: Element — Fire (spirit, action), Earth (matter, form), Air (mind, relation), Water (soul, depth). Modality — Cardinal signs initiate seasons; Fixed signs consolidate them; Mutable signs disperse and transition. Each modality appears in each element once.
When you open your natal chart in Kairos, every planet’s position is computed to sub-degree precision using VSOP87 theory — a truncated series of thousands of periodic terms for each body. The resulting ecliptic longitude is then mapped into a zodiac sign by dividing the 360° ecliptic into twelve 30° arcs beginning at the vernal equinox (0° Aries).
The sign your natal planet falls in is permanent — it does not change over your lifetime. The transiting planet’s current sign, however, moves continuously. Kairos’s transit engine computes where every planet is right now, identifies which natal placements it is forming aspects to, and weights those contacts by the planet’s speed, the tightness of the aspect, and the thematic relevance of the signs involved.
The Chaldean order — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon — also appears directly in Kairos’s planetary hour calculator. Each hour of the day is assigned a planetary ruler by cycling through this sequence starting from the day’s ruling planet. The sign and planet together make every hour texturally distinct for timing decisions, rituals, and intentional action.
Sign boundaries in Kairos use the tropical zodiac: 0° Aries is defined as the Sun’s position at the vernal equinox each year — not a fixed stellar reference. This places the zodiac in sync with Earth’s seasons. Kairos also supports the sidereal zodiac (used in Vedic astrology) where signs are anchored to the stars via the Lahiri Ayanamsa.
