Astrology · Transits & ProgressionsYour natal chart is a snapshot — the positions of the planets at the precise moment of your birth, frozen in place. The sky, however, keeps moving. Every day, planets continue their orbits, and as they travel they cross the degrees held by your natal placements. When a transiting planet (its current sky position) reaches a degree that forms a significant geometric relationship with a natal point (a planet, angle, or house cusp in your birth chart), a transit is active.
Think of the natal chart as a tuning board — a set of frequencies established at birth. Transiting planets are like musicians walking across that board, striking different strings as they pass. The quality of the sound depends on which musician is moving (the transiting planet), which string they touch (the natal point), and how they strike it (the aspect formed between them).
Sensitive natal points fall into three categories. Natal planets carry the most meaning because each represents a distinct principle of life (will, emotion, mind, love, drive, expansion, structure, revolution, dissolution, transformation). The four angles — Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, and IC — represent the chart's structural skeleton and are especially powerful transit targets; a planet contacting an angle often coincides with visible, external events. House cusps mark the boundaries of life domains, and a planet crossing a cusp can shift emphasis from one area to another.
The transit formula: A transit is always a meeting between two principles. The natal planet's meaning defines the life area being touched. The transiting planet's meaning defines the quality of energy arriving. The aspect type defines how that meeting unfolds — harmoniously, tensely, or as a direct encounter. All three factors together form the interpretation.
Planets rarely arrive at an exact degree and then instantly disappear. Instead, transits build gradually, peak at exactitude, and then dissolve. The orb defines how many degrees away from exact a transiting planet can be and still be considered “active” for that contact.
Within that orb window, every transit passes through three distinct phases. In the applying phase, the transiting planet is approaching the exact alignment — the aspect is building, pressure accumulates, and the themes of the transit announce themselves. This phase is often the most palpable, carrying an urgency or a sense of something impending. At the exact hit, the alignment is perfected and the transit reaches full intensity: events crystallize, clarity arrives, or a situation reaches its turning point. In the separating phase, the planet has passed through the exact degree and is moving away — the pressure releases, consequences or results emerge, and integration begins.
Applying transits are generally felt more strongly than separating ones. The building tension has a quality of anticipation — an outer planet squaring your natal Sun while still approaching exact feels different from the same aspect one degree past exact. Once the peak is crossed, the energy begins to resolve.
When a planet turns retrograde, a transit that seemed finished can re-open. Retrograde motion carries the transiting planet back over a natal point it has already passed, creating what practitioners call the three-pass transit: the planet crosses the natal degree going direct, reverses and crosses it again retrograde, then moves forward over it a final time when it resumes direct motion. The retrograde pass often internalizes what the first direct pass surfaced — it is a second chance to process, not simply a repetition.
Orb allowances differ by planet speed. Kairos uses broader orbs for slower-moving planets because their transits extend over longer periods: Saturn and Jupiter carry a 5° maximum orb for natal aspects in the daily transit feed; Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto use a tighter 2° active orb because even at that range their transits last months.
Not all transits are created equal. The speed of the transiting planet determines both the duration of the influence and its scale — whether it touches a day of your life, a year, or an entire chapter spanning many years. Astrology traditionally groups planets into three tiers by their apparent motion through the zodiac.
The Saturn transit is the archetype of the social planet experience: disciplined, time-sensitive, and impossible to skip. It moves roughly 12–15° per year, spending about 2.5 years in each sign. When Saturn transits a natal planet, its exact contact is active for 2–4 weeks at peak intensity, but the full orb period — within 8° — can span several months. Retrograde adds the characteristic three-pass structure.
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto operate on an entirely different timescale. Pluto's orbit spans 248 years; a Pluto transit to your natal Sun may be a once-in-a-lifetime event, active within 2° for a year or more across its three passes. These are not daily or weekly influences but chapter-level transits that rewrite the underlying narrative of a life area.
Every transit interpretation is assembled from three building blocks. Understand each component independently, then combine them to form the full picture.
The natal planet sets the stage: it names the life principle under activation. Natal Saturn rules discipline, structure, and limitation; natal Venus rules relationship, beauty, and value; natal Mars rules drive, will, and desire. When a transit touches natal Venus, love, aesthetic experience, and financial matters become the arena for whatever energy is arriving.
The transiting planet brings its own essential nature to that arena. Saturn transiting natal Venus asks that relationship be structured, tested, or matured. Jupiter transiting natal Venus expands and enriches the same domain. Mars transiting natal Venus creates urgency, desire, or potential conflict in relationship. Same natal point; entirely different experiences depending on who is visiting.
The aspect type shapes the tone of the meeting. The conjunction (0°) is a direct encounter — the transiting planet's energy floods the natal principle, often forcefully. The trine (120°) is a flow state, where the energies align without friction and opportunities arrive gracefully. The square (90°) is tension and challenge, demanding action and resolution. The opposition (180°) is an axis of awareness, often manifesting through other people or external circumstances. Sextiles (60°) open doors; sesquiquadrates and inconjuncts (135°, 150°) create nagging friction without clear resolution.
House placement adds a final layer. Which house does the natal planet occupy? That house describes the stage on which the transit plays out. Saturn squaring natal Venus in the 7th house emphasizes the partnership dimension; the same aspect with Venus in the 2nd house may feel more financial than relational. And the transiting planet's own house position — which house it currently occupies in your natal chart — adds the setting from which the energy is arriving.

The feed is divided into two tiers. Daily Transits surface the personal and social planet contacts (Moon through Saturn) that are most active right now — ranked from highest-scoring to lowest, with applying transits weighted more heavily than separating ones. Each entry shows the transiting planet, the aspect, the natal target, the current orb, and a direction indicator (applying or separating).
Lifetime Events is a separate section that surfaces outer-planet transits (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) currently within 1.5° of exact to personal natal planets or angles. These are the slow-moving chapter-level contacts that operate over months or years — they appear here because they require different interpretive framing than the transient daily influences. An outer planet conjunct natal Sun at 0.8° applying is a defining moment in progress; Kairos flags it so it is not lost in the daily noise.
A note on the Sun: Planets traveling close to the Sun are subject to
solar conditions that modify how freely they can express their nature. Kairos evaluates
these conditions using the orb thresholds from William Lilly’s Christian
Astrology (1647), encoded as AstroTerms constants.
The planet sits at the very center of the Sun. Rather than being burnt away, it is said to be empowered — royal and fully illuminated. The rarest and most potent solar condition.
The planet is too close to the Sun to act with independence. Its natural significations are weakened or suppressed — the solar fire overwhelms its own light. Mars and Saturn are considered less damaging when combust; Mercury is frequently combust and tolerates it best.
The planet is too close to the Sun to be visible in the night sky. Less severe than combustion but still diminished — the planet operates in reduced capacity and without the full power of its independent light.
When a transiting planet is cazimi, combust, or under the beams of the Sun at the time it forms an aspect to your natal chart, Kairos notes this condition alongside the transit reading. A transiting Venus combust while forming a trine to your natal Jupiter, for instance, still represents an expansive relational opportunity — but the planet’s expression is partially eclipsed by solar proximity, softening the effect.
The transit view also integrates the transiting planets’ house positions in your natal chart, so you can see not only what aspect is forming but from which life domain the energy is arriving. A transiting Saturn in your 6th house squaring natal Venus reads differently than the same aspect with Saturn in the 10th — the house tells you where the pressure originates.
